Seminario: “Deep Learning – Theory and Applications in the Natural Sciences”
Data: Lunedì 12 settembre 2016, ore 10.30
Luogo: Centro di Competenza Ict-Sud, Contrada Vermicelli, Rende

The process of learning is essential for building natural or artificial intelligent systems. Thus, not surprisingly, machine learning is at the center of artificial intelligence today. And deep learning–essentially learning in complex systems comprised of multiple processing stages–is at the forefront of machine learning. In the last few years, deep learning has led to major performance advances in a variety of engineering disciplines from computer vision, to speech recognition, to natural language processing, and to robotics. Deep learning systems are now deployed ubiquitously and used by billions of people every day for instance through cell phones and web search engines. While we do not yet have a comprehensive theory of deep learning, we will provide a brief overview of a growing body of theoretical results about deep learning highlighting some of the remaining gaps and open questions in the field. We will then present various applications of deep learning to problems in the natural sciences, such as the detection of exotic particles in high-energy physics, the prediction of molecular properties and reactions in chemistry, and the prediction of protein structures in biology.

Relatore: prof. Pierre Baldi, University of California in Irvine, School of Information and Computer Sciences, Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics

NOTE BIOGRAFICHE: Pierre Baldi is a Chancellor’s Professor of Computer Science at University of California, Irvine and the director of the UCI Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics.
Born in Rome (Italy), Pierre Baldi received his Bachelor’s of Science and Master of Science degrees at the University of Paris, in France. He then received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1986. From 1986 to 1988, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Diego. From 1988 to 1995, he held faculty and member of the technical staff positions at the California Institute of Technology and at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he was given the Lew Allen Award for Research Excellence in 1993. He was CEO of a start up company called Net-ID from 1995 to 1999 and joined University of California Irvine in 1999.
Pierre Baldi is a fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the IEEE. He is also the recipient of the 2010 Eduardo R. Caianiello Prize for Scientific Contributions to the field of Neural Networks.
Pierre Baldi’s research include artificial intelligence, statistical machine learning, and data mining, and their applications to problems in the life sciences in genomics, proteomics, systems biology, computational neuroscience, and, recently, deep learning. Pierre Baldi has over 250 publications in his field of research and four books and, among them, the worldwide best-seller “Bioinformatics: the Machine Learning Approach” (MIT Press, 1998).
